Mid-century modern design has really made its comeback, so we thought we would go into the history and aesthetics that make mid-century modern furniture so desirable.  Starting around 1945 and lasting until 1975, the mid-century modern design aesthetic was inspired by the widely popular Bauhaus movement that took place in Germany. The world was winding down from being at war and it presented opportunities for Bauhaus designers to immigrate to America to create new things.

Along with that, technological advances made it possible to produce and develop a wider array of new materials, so designers were able to explore new textures and effects, colors and new form altogether. Many of these designers, including Herman Miller and Charles and Ray Eames, took inspiration from these new materials and created iconic homes and furniture pieces that people are still taking inspiration in today.

This type of furniture and architecture was never seen before, namely when looking at its key features. The principal elements that were introduced included an emphasis on functionality over style, uncluttered, sleek lines, minimal ornamentation, and the incorporation of different traditional and non-traditional materials.

These design elements allowed the mid-century modern design movement took the world by storm. Many of them are still present in the furniture we see today.  People all across the world seek out mid-century modern pieces of furniture to complete their homes. The sleek lines draw the eye to different points of the room, which can make any space seem bigger.

If you want to look into buying mid-century modern furniture, it’s important to understand the distinguishing features of the style and how it can function within your home. You don’t have to be an expert or even spend a ton of money to achieve the look you’re going for. Find a piece that you are completely in love with and start building around it. Make sure to avoid having too many patterns and colors in one room so your design doesn’t get too bogged down.

As you can probably tell, we’re pretty obsessed with mid-century modern furniture. It’s beautiful, stylish, and functional and can complement any design.
