Guide to Apopka

The City of Apopka came from humble beginnings, as a small trade station in Northwest Orange County and was incorporated in 1883 as the “Town of Apopka City” which stood until its name officially changed in the early 1900s. Currently, the city has a population of over 50,000 and is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan area. Apopka is known as the “Indoor Foliage Capital of the World” because of its multi-million-dollar foliage industry.  The city itself is spread out over 24.9 sq miles and much of the land outside of the commercial and residential area is still used for agriculture. The word “Apopka” is rooted from the Seminole word, “Ahapopka” which translates to “Potato eating place”.

As Apopka is in both Orange and Seminole counties, the city offers its residents – who are mainly families and young business professionals, a sparse suburban feel with primarily larger lot homes and a convenient 30-minute drive to Downtown Orlando. In Apopka, there are extensive recreational programs, safety programs, farmers markets and community events throughout the year that the entire family will enjoy! Whether you choose to relax at the outdoor Saturday Sounds concerts designed with you in mind, partake in a friendly youth soccer match, engage in a Watercolor Painting or Zumba class, Apopka has something for people of all ages!

In addition, Apopka offers different attractions for locals and visitors alike. These include the Museum of the Apopkans, located in the historic Carrol Building that was built in 1932, where visitors can get much more information relating to the city’s history, and Wekiwa Springs State Park along with Kelly Park/Rock Springs State Park, where you can hike, swim, or just bask in the beauty of the outdoors. Apopka also offers a great variety of restaurants and cuisines, from notable steakhouses such as the Back Room Steakhouse to Italian cafes like Caffe Positano and the Cuban cuisine influence at Herbers Cuban café. Seafood restaurants are also a staple, and you can also find traditional Irish pubs, Chinese food, sushi restaurants, barbecue options and so much more!
